Golf Fitness & Weight Loss

Gavin’s Fitness Journey:

When Gavin commenced his program with Outright Change Fitness it had been a couple of years since he had last focused on his fitness. Being wrapped up in work had become the focus of his day and week. He had previously been a keen amateur golfer but found it difficult to play 18 holes without incurring injuries each time. In his initial consultation he indicated that he wanted to improve his functional movement, be fitter and stronger and reduce his weight to an acceptable level and wanted to be physically capable of swinging a golf club without restriction.

Taking a highly committed approach to his training he completed the TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) Functional Movement Screening with Outright Change Fitness which, involved a full review of his movement as it related to his golf swing. A series of exercises were prescribed by his trainer as well as one on one training and outdoor Bootcamp classes.

The results:

(1) Body-weight decreased (87 kilos to 78.9 kilos), a 9.3% decrease
(2) BMI (Body Mass Index) changed from 23.6% to 18.4%
(3) Waist to hip ratio decreased from 0.96 to 0.90 (8 cm off his waist)
(4) Golf ‘fitness’ handicap improved by 13 points i.e. from 30 to 17

Hear from Gavin:

I feel fitter and stronger and as a result I am feeling like I did 10 or 20 years ago. After doing two weeks of training I almost halved my golf fitness handicap. Some of the movements where I wasn’t coming near to the required flexibility or strength I am now doing with ease. My focus is now around my fitness routine, the first thing to be planned and the other activities work around them now which, is a great way to start your week i.e. where things you’re looking forward to are foremost in your mind. The improved level of fitness and endurance has helped make my overall golf game improve both from a physical movement perspective but also my mental golf game. It’s been interesting to note that I’ve performed better on my second nine than my first nine which, was previously rarely the case prior, due to fatigue. This has been a real motivator for me to keep going.

Caroline understands my style and how I like to get the work done. Her advice has been invaluable. I owe a lot of my progress so far to her knowledge and encouragement. What I’ve found particularly useful with working with Caroline is that her focus is on functional movement. Her focus isn’t to solely work on muscle gain or weight loss. She has the addition of the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Certification which focuses on functional movement specifically needed to swing a golf club. I don’t need to look good in a mirror, I just need to hit the ball with power and control which I am now doing now! There’s more to be done but I feel that I’ve made the right choice.
